SCIENCE PROGRAM DIRECTOR JOB
DESCRIPTION
ACCOUNTABILITY:
To the Seacamp Director (SEACAMP
Summer Camp)
To the Director of Science Education (Newfound Harbor
Marine Institute)
QUALIFICATIONS:
A. Advanced degree in the marine
sciences.
B. Minimum one year supervisory and/or administrative
experience in residential outdoor education.
C. Minimum one year teaching experience.
D. Experience in conducting student field
experiences.
E. Experience with staff schedules and set-up of course
schedules.
F. Strong oral and written communication skills to
communicate effectively with students, chaperones,
parents, and staff.
G. Must be experienced in keeping accurate records,
compiling, and analyzing data in making reports that
require a minimum of review and editing.
H. Must have a high degree of originality, creativity,
skill, and professional competence in applying technical
expertise to interpret and convert Seacamp/NHMI
objectives and policies into specific plans, programs,
and activities.
I. Must demonstrate superior willingness and ability to
work with others in a leadership capacity.
J. Experience in basic use of the computer, audio visual
equipment, experimental techniques, laboratory exercises,
aquarium maintenance, field techniques, and boat
operations.
K. The following is a list of the general qualities and
skills necessary for a successful management candidate to
know or be willing to learn in order to be an effective
manager of Seacamp/NHMI resources.
1. Interest in
developing personal management skills and helping
others develop appropriate management skills needed
by Seacamp/NHMI.
2. Ability to work in harmony with people - must
understand people, must be able to deal with both
individuals and groups, and must be able to
supervise them without creating undue tension.
3. Understanding basic concepts - a grasp of the
principles of management planning, organizing,
delegating, directing and controlling human
resources, budget, equipment, and instruction.
4. Integrity - an honest, straightforward attitude
is essential to a good working relationship with
employees. Employees quickly recognize deceit and
react to broken promises.
5. Emotional maturity - a manager must have the
flexibility to adjust to the unpleasant but
necessary realities of life and work situations.
The ability to think logically and to have a
positive constructive outlook on life and work
without ignoring realities or responsibilities.
6. Communication - effective managers must
recognize the need for two-way communication
between themselves and their subordinates, and
between themselves and their supervisors.
7. Objectivity - the ability to see that there are
two or ten sides to every story is extremely
important. Managers must be able to restrain and
control their own emotional reactions. They must
gather all facts, listen to all sides of the story,
then reach a decision.
8. Social sensitivity - the caring manager must
understand employees feelings and respond
accordingly. Managers must be able to "put
themselves into the shoes" of those who are under
their direction.
9. Intelligence - the ability to think clearly is
important. The manager has to understand management
principles, put them to use, and direct
subordinates capably.
10. Must demonstrate initiative and leadership
qualities.
11. Should be innovative in developing workable
schedules as the programs and policies evolve and
change from season to season.
12. Exceptional interest and enthusiasm.
13. Ability to develop course outlines, evaluation
of reports, inventories, requisitions, and
budgets.
14. Excellent health and vitality.
POSITION DUTIES
AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
GENERAL
RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. Areas of
administration, public relations, and program as
listed in the Annual Plan of Work, Science Program
Director Notebook, and as assigned by the
Director(s).
B. Administration of program and supervision of site
as designated by the Director(s). (I.C.O.P. - In
Charge Of Property)
C. To assure compliance with all standards and
regulations for operations as legislated by local,
state, and federal laws and/or agencies, and in
accordance with the American Camping Association
standards.
D. Know and/or learn to be responsible for all areas
of operation appropriate to the position held:
1. To be the
representative of management - loyal to the
management and equally loyal to employees;
2. To see that programs are well prepared,
properly carried out and that their costs fall
within budgetary limits;
3. To prepare time and work schedules for
personnel, as assigned;
4. To balance the work load among assigned
employees;
5. To keep job descriptions up to date;
6. To see that safety standards are observed;
inform Director(s) or any infractions;
7. To instruct employees in the maintenance and
care of equipment as appropriate to specific
position;
8. To be responsible for maintaining good
personal conduct and discipline; to be a
positive influence on other staff;
9. To abide by and instruct all employees with
regard to Seacamp/NHMI personnel practices and
operating procedures, and enforce them when
necessary;
10. As a member of the administrative staff,
attend all administrative meetings and assist
with planning, policy review/revision, etc.;
11. To make recommendations for improvements and
to be a decision-maker within own area of
responsibility;
12. To be responsible for keeping abreast of
changes within the field, keeping up-to-date on
new programs and techniques. Managers are
actively involved in continuing their own
education and striving to improve their
managerial techniques. They are also responsible
for the continuing education of employees they
supervise, within the limitations of allocated
resources.
E. Participate in all Seacamp/NHMI
functions.
F. Review and update Plan of Work
and Science Program Director Manual on an annual
basis.
G. Write and submit monthly plans of work and monthly
reports.
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
Science Program
Coordination:
A. Recruit and hire,
following Seacamp procedures, a science program staff
of 15+ instructors each season.
B. Supervise program specialist in production of
science staff schedules.
C. Assist Director of Science Education with
observation/critique of science program staff. Submit
written evaluations to the Director(s) and review your
evaluation with the instructors individually.
D. Assist Director of Science Education with updating
of Habitat Resource Manual, staff training and program
administration guidelines, as needed.
E. Supervise site visit logs by each instructor and
supply copy to the Director(s).
F. Participate in orientation and training of science
instructors, interns and assistants.
G. Assist with general staff training, as
assigned.
H. Complete a preliminary budget for science program
and review with the Director(s).
I. Participate in development of the annual report to
Board of Directors.
J. Outline science procedures and regulations for
staff and campers/students.
K. Update science curriculum files and science course
outlines, as assigned.
L. Assist Director of Science Education to upgrade
laboratory and library resources.
M. Report boat maintenance problems/needs to the
Harbormaster.
N. Assist Waterfront Director approving staff boat
requests, as needed.
O. Complete end of season report(s)/evaluation(s).
P. Hold monthly performance evaluation meetings with
science instructors.
Q. Summer Camp:
1. Schedule guest speakers
for summer science nights, assign valves for
science activity night and at least one science
valve for the other evening programs; supply
calendars to Camp Director, Head Unit Leader, and
the Scheduling Coordinator.
2. Outline a schedule of boat trips, van trips, and
labs; supply a copy to the Waterfront Director,
Scheduling Coordinator, Head Unit Leader, and Camp
Directors.
3. Assist the SCUBA Director on selecting
instructors for SCUBA science classes; and review
camper requests before deciding on which and how
many classes are to be offered. Review with the
Camp Director before assigning staff to courses and
schedules.
4. Supervise camper awards and participation
certificates for science classes.
5. Give meal time announcements per week about what
is happening in the science classes and/or
program.
6. Produce and edit the Seacamp Journal of Marine
Science.
Laboratory/Library
Supervision:
A. Maintain lab in good
condition.
B. Maintain science program supply budget. Requisition
supplies and materials; approve all purchases made by
the science instructors.
C. Supervise inventory of laboratory stockroom and
library.
D. Summer camp:
1. Have the lab cleaned
and interest areas set up for Visitor's Day.
2. Supervise the lab campership.
3. Supervise the maintenance/storage of A.V.
equipment in coordination with the staff
photographer.
Teaching:
A. Coordinate/Teach programs
in tropical marine science for visiting advanced
school groups, as assigned.
B. Instruct or assist in the science/SCUBA programs,
as needed or as is desirable.
C. Coordinate any special science programs (i.e.
thematic, International,Girl Scouts, Monroe County,
etc.).
D. Maintain all school records, reports, etc. required
of the position (see instructor/coordinator
duties).
E. Work on special projects, as needed, including
research, conservation issues, association
newsletters, etc.
